Your customers may need to pay vendors, contractors, suppliers, or service providers outside the US. Today, we’re launching international payments on Unit: giving companies a way to offer cross-border payouts to customers over the SWIFT network.

Why this matters

More ways to move money, on the same infrastructure

International payments can sit alongside accounts, cards, and existing payment rails (ACH, RTP, wires and check) in the same product experience. They use the same ledger and dashboard, and settle against the bank relationship you already operate.

Full visibility and control over transactions

For each international payment, your customers can see transaction-level data on exchange rates, fees, expected recipient amounts, and payment status from the time it is initiated through completion.

Each payment starts with a quote that locks the exchange rate and shows exactly how much will be sent, what the fees are, and how much the recipient will receive in their local currency. Your customer sees and approves those terms before the payment is sent.

Built to handle the edge cases

International payments can fail in ways domestic ones don't. Each scenario is processed as a distinct, structured event via the API, so your product can guide the customer on what to do next.

For example, if a payment is returned, the funds route back to the originating account automatically. The return is surfaced with the relevant status and reason, so you can build your own logic around what happens next, whether that means notifying the customer, reconciling the payment, or giving them a way to try again.

How it works

Partners can add international payout capabilities through the Unit API. Illustratively, when your customer is ready to send a payout, they can select or add a beneficiary, enter either a USD or foreign currency amount, and review the exchange rate and applicable fees before submitting the payment.

Payments are delivered over the SWIFT network, which reaches banks in 190+ countries and territories. Your customers provide standard beneficiary details, such as a SWIFT/BIC code and an account number or IBAN, so their vendors don't need to supply anything unusual or set up anything new.

You see your customers’ international payment activity in the same Unit Dashboard alongside the rest of their activity.
